[LL]: Leadership Lesson: 25 Years Later, This Leadership Lesson Remains

Hey Leader 🙌

25 years ago, I walked into an 8 am college class as an 18-year-old freshman at Michigan State.

4 hours later, I walked out to a different world.

Without smartphones or constant internet access, my classmates and I had no idea what had happened.

Then I saw the images.

Like millions of Americans, I was glued to the television.

In the days that followed, questions outnumbered answers.

People even discussed a potential military draft.

Having just turned 18, that hit home.

Looking back 25 years later, what stays with me most is the sacrifice.

The first responders and everyday Americans who ran toward danger to help complete strangers.

I hope none of us ever face a moment requiring that level of courage.

But there’s a leadership lesson we can apply today:

Prepare yourself so you can serve others when the moment calls.

Build your body.

Strengthen your mind.

Develop your self-leadership.

Because when adversity arrives, people need leaders capable of carrying weight beyond their own.

My challenge for you this week?

Ask yourself: Am I becoming someone others can count on when things get hard?

Then close one gap.

Make it a GREAT week!

The 5 Immutable Rules of Leadership

  1. Take Extreme Ownership: Everything is your responsibility, even when it’s not your fault.
  2. Put Your Oxygen Mask On First: Lead yourself before leading others.
  3. Wield Influence Through Moral Authority: People follow who you are, not what you say.
  4. It’s Not About You, Never Was, Never Will Be: Elevate others, build legacy.
  5. Turn Adversity Into Advantage: Pain is your power; use it.
