[LL]: If You Talk to Everyone, You Talk to No One

Hey Leader 🙌

Early in my career, I’d send group emails looking for someone to take action, but that started with:

“Hey team…Can you execute?”

Inclusive.

Efficient.

And completely ineffective.

Why? Because when you talk to everyone, you talk to no one.

In marketing, we call it an avatar.

If your message is for “people,” it flops.

If it’s for “women 40+ interested in weight loss,” it converts.

Leadership is no different.

When you write, “Team, we need to execute,” no one feels responsible.

But when you say to the group, “Sarah, I need you to own a 24-hour lead follow-up by Friday,” everything changes.

Vagueness creates drift.

Specificity creates ownership.

Here’s what happens in most organizations:

Leaders speak in generalities.

People assume it’s for someone else.

Standards slip.

Then we blame culture.

That’s not the issue.

It’s communication.

This week, audit your communication:

Are you addressing “the team”?

Or assigning clear accountability?

Is the outcome dated and defined?

After all, leadership isn’t about vague language.

It’s about the precise direction.

Specificity is powerful.

Make it a GREAT week.

The 5 Immutable Rules of Leadership

  1. Take Extreme Ownership: Everything is your responsibility, even when it’s not your fault.
  2. Put Your Oxygen Mask On First: Lead yourself before leading others.
  3. Wield Influence Through Moral Authority: People follow who you are, not what you say.
  4. It’s Not About You, Never Was, Never Will Be: Elevate others, build legacy.
  5. Turn Adversity Into Advantage: Pain is your power, use it.
