Happy Monday Mindset!
Last month, I joined my buddies CJ and Joey at a men’s Christian retreat in Texas. Both are rock star owners in our brand—and even more importantly—good friends.
The retreat was put on by my friend Steve. If you Googled him 10 years ago, you’d see all the outward success anyone could want: an NFL career, a Super Bowl win (beating Tom Brady, no less), even a Men’s Fitness cover.
But behind the curtain? He was broken. Addicted to dopamine, women, drugs, and alcohol—spiraling out of control.
Then, in 2018, Steve had a radical encounter with the Holy Spirit. It transformed his life, his marriage, and his purpose.
Now, I can’t relate to the Super Bowl rings or magazine covers.
But I can relate to abusing drugs and alcohol—and to knowing what it feels like to be empty and in need of a recharge.
My own recovery started in January 2017.
And that’s why I reached out to CJ and Joey, both men of faith. Together, we spent the weekend leaning into something bigger.
It wasn’t easy. We shared our shortcomings and reflected. We pushed through 1,000 lunges and endured ice baths.
We practiced what I call Deliberate Discomfort—a key theme in my upcoming book, Turn Adversity Into Advantage (early 2026 release).
And guess what? It was exactly what I needed.
Since then, I’ve reconnected with my 12-step sponsor, and I’m more grounded in my faith.
Here’s the takeaway: your biggest breakthroughs often come through your biggest discomforts.
And when you surround yourself with good-hearted friends to walk with you through it, the journey becomes that much more powerful.
Make it a GREAT week!
