Leadership Lesson: 4 Stoic Virtues: Justice

Justice is defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary as: the quality of being impartial, or fair.

Justice is an incredibly valuable virtue especially since life is not fair. In fact, anyone telling you otherwise, should not be trusted.

As a leader you have to strive for justice in order to support your team, clients and following.

Although as a leader, you also have to understand the concept that fair is not equal and equal is not fair. This is true justice and why it can be so difficult which takes wisdom to decipher.

By now you can see the virtues compound.

Your focus as a leader?

Create value and justice for your following in every opportunity possible. You will need courage and wisdom by your side to aid you in this pursuit..

  • Justice
  • Moderation

3 lessons from 7 years

Happy Monday Mindset!🙌

Last week was action-packed as we hosted hundreds of owners and coaches at our Elite Training here at Fit Body HQ! This is to pour into our coaches so they can be even better equipped to pour into you and our clients.💥

Aside from connecting, learning, and growing, we also celebrated 7 years of service for our Head Coach Jake!🥳

I can barely believe it!😱

Jake and I met about 8 years ago while he was managing a frozen yogurt shop. I immediately noticed he was wise beyond his years. He had a strong attention to detail, always remembering my name and order.👊

After months of talking to Tatiana on how much I liked him. I ended up running into him at a big box gym over the weekend before we opened up Sundays and had the big AH-HAH!💪

I had known about his customer service aptitude consistently for nearly a year, and then when I was shown his fitness prowess.. I knew he had the raw ingredients to be an incredible coach!

Thankfully for your and Mission Viejo Fit Body’s benefit, I was right!💯

So I immediately went up to chat with him and invited him for a workout. He then became an intern, part-time coach, full-time coach, and Head Coach and now coaches new Franchise Partners with John & team to help the growth of the brand!

Absolutely incredible!

In reflecting on this experience, I pulled 3 lessons to help you on your journey:

1. Find the personality, train the talent. With the right person who is hungry, humble, and smart, you can train talent. The opposite is not always true. Jake has the raw ingredients and we were able to provide training to transform him into 1 of the best coaches in the entire brand. Although he did the work!

This is also true about you and your fitness. If you have the raw ingredients of having a big WHY, growth mindset, and being coachable, we can get you in shape. 100% guaranteed! Although, like Jake, you will still have to do the work!

2.Always be recruiting.  You never know when or where you are going to find an awesome teammate to join your mission or your life. Be friendly and keep a lookout as the wealth in life resides in your relationships! This holds very true for your fitness and personal life.

3.Growth mindset is a winning formula. Jake’s had a strong growth mindset from day 1. He was willing to get better and has done the work to do so! Similar to your fitness journey, you must take on a growth mindset to see the value of the challenge you will face ahead, and to fully enjoy a fulfilled life!

Leadership Lesson: 4 Stoic Virtues: Wisdom

“The More I Learn The Less I Know. Tony Bennett

This quote perfectly describes the 2nd stoic virtue of wisdom.

As the sober reality is that attaining wisdom is a lifetime pursuit. Something that you can acquire more of, but will always be elusive to some degree.

Although the journey of its pursuit is certainly a valuable one and one worth traveling…

“OK, Bryce, there’s value in gaining wisdom but how do I attain it?! you might be asking..

Many ways although the truth is that most times wisdom can only truly be derived by life experience.  Although the closest life hack I learned at a young age was to develop relationships with your elders.

They possess it due to their vast life experience..And if you listen well; you can unlock a world of wisdom, growth, and leadership.

Looking forward to covering Justice next week!

3 takeaways from 9 years.. 150 150 Bryce Henson

3 takeaways from 9 years..

Mission Viejo Fit Body just celebrated our 9-year anniversary this past Saturday.🥳

Thank you to you and all those who supported!🙌

1 part of me cannot believe nearly a decade has whipped by quicker than a blink of an eye.😱

1 part of me reflects on the blood, sweat, and tears poured in by you, all our clients, my team, and I over 9 amazing years!

The backstory?👇

My wife Tatiana and I had just put our life savings into this little dream of owning a Fit Body Boot Camp location where we could coach clients to fitness success!

As fitness changed our lives and we wanted to give that back to our community here in Orange County.

When opening, we knew we were equipped to change people’s fitness.💪

However, we didn’t fully realize the relationships, and deep connections we would make with you, our team, and the community along the way.

Without question, this has been the biggest blessing!🙏

So in memory of the 9 years of blood sweat and tears, here are 3 learning lessons that can help you on your fitness journey..

  1. Take calculated risks toward your dreams. Don’t rush into things. However, you only have 1 crack at this thing called life. So make it count! Take big shots and calculated risks. Invest in your health and fitness often. If you don’t, you will live with regret.
  2. Your support group (aka team) is everything. You, our team of clients, and coaches are the heroes of our business. You deserve true recognition and praise. And just like in business, fitness is a team sport. You need the support system of coaches and accountability partners to stay on track. As without a team, you will limit your progress.
  3. The more you sweat in practice, the less you bleed in war. Just like business, fitness is war. You must prepare now, far before you need to rely on it. Why? Well because at some point, something unexpected will come up. Heaven forbid cancer, disease, or another virus that will attack your immune system which is inevitable. However, if you prepare your body now, you will be thankful later.

Happy 9-Year Mission Viejo Fit Body and here’s to make more!

Leadership Lesson: 4 Stoic Virtues: Courage 150 150 Bryce Henson

Leadership Lesson: 4 Stoic Virtues: Courage

I listed the 4 Stoic Virtues last week below..

They are in no specific order according to the Stoics. But the best way I digest them specific to leadership is attacking COURAGE as number 1.

The fact is that strong Leadership often times means going against the grain. It means taking action not that is NOT part of the status quo. Many times, this action ruffles feathers.

And sometimes a strong leader even has to make decisions that hurt some of the followers to protect the whole tribe.

You need COURAGE to lead this way.

In fact, here’s one of my favorite leadership quotes by the late Steve Jobs of Apple, Inc.

“If you want to make everyone happy, Don’t be a leader – Sell ice cream.”

And while you need all 4 other virtues to lead, without COURAGE to execute, nothing else matters.

This is the hard part of leadership. But why it’s so valuable.

The good news is that COURAGE is a just muscle that you can improve. The more you flex it, the stronger it becomes.

I look forward to diving into Wisdom next week.

  • Justice

How my battle with alcoholism can help your fitness journey 150 150 Bryce Henson

How my battle with alcoholism can help your fitness journey

Yes, that’s right…

Not a fun topic to admit, but it’s the truth.💯

I am recovering alcoholic.

In fact, I just celebrated my 6th-year alcohol-free at the end of December.🙌

How have I done it?

Definitely not 6 years at a time.

Rather, 1 day at a time..

Why is this important?🤔

We are in the 2nd week of our brand-wide 10lb Challenge.

And in the next week or 2, the newness & excitement will soon wear off.🎯

The reality of the achy muscles, the early morning or late evenings will set it.

Our challengers might even begin to think..

“If it’s always going to be this hard, well I might as well quit!”

The worst part?😱

That’s a false thought!

Although rest assured, I had those same thoughts when I first started my fitness regime in January of 2007.

And the exact same when I decided to put down the bottle in December 2016.🥃

I thought to myself during those early days..

“I will never make it if it will always be this hard.”

But here’s the thing..

It WON’T always be this hard even though it seems like the moment!📍

Why?

It feels this way just because you cannot see the progress yet.

Although you are making progress day by day.💪

This is the same when it was hard to stack a few weeks together, and then BOOM!💥

The next thing I knew I picked up a 6-month sobriety chip.🎉

I gained some momentum..

Then a year, then 2 years.

I looked back and thought..

“This isn’t easy, but I can do it”.

So can you!👊

My friend, it won’t always be this hard.

You will gain momentum.

The secret?

Just 1 day at a time..

Head up and onward, my team and I are here for you!🙏

Leadership Lesson: The 4 Stoic Virtues 150 150 Bryce Henson

Leadership Lesson: The 4 Stoic Virtues

A philosophy called Stoicim emerged thousands of years ago in the ancient world by a man named Zeno who was a successful sea merchant and died in Athens, 236 BC.

Stoicism was created as a framework on how to live a better life and to cope with its challenges being Zeno lost everything in a bad shipwreck.  As ultimately, life is challenge & suffering. So stoicim provides a framework on how to lead oneself and others despite these challenges.

Thus, leadership and stoicism are intertwined. In fact, I refer to Stoicism as the philosophy of successful leaders.

The Stoics elaborated a detailed taxonomy of virtue, dividing virtue into four main types:

  • Wisdom
  • Justice
  • Courage
  • Moderation

We will spend the next 4 weeks diving into each of them to provide you with a stronger framework on how to lead yourself and others through the 4 stoic virtues.

[MM] Perspective 150 150 Bryce Henson

[MM] Perspective

Happy Monday Mindset!🙌

As we kick off our New Year “10Lbs Challenge” brand-wide, I wanted to strengthen your mindset for the road ahead! As yes, there will be A LOT of success, but also A LOT of challenges!

And no better way than to provide some perspective from some challenges our ancestors faced. As I read this article recently, I was humbled and inspired, so I wanted to share it with you.👇

“For a small amount of perspective at this moment, imagine you were born in 1900. When you are 14, World War I starts and ends on your 18th birthday with 22 million people killed.

Later in the year, a Spanish Flu epidemic hits the planet and runs until you are 20 years old. 50 million people die from it in those two years. Yes, 50 million from the pandemic.

When you’re 29, the Great Depression begins. Unemployment hits 25%, and global GDP drops 27%. That runs until you are 33. The country nearly collapses along with the world economy. When you turn 39, World War II starts.

You aren’t even over the hill yet.

When you’re 41, the United States is fully pulled into WWII. Between your 39th and 45th birthday, 75 million people perish in the war and the Holocaust kills twelve million. At 52, the Korean War starts, and 5 million perish.

At 64 the Vietnam War begins, and it doesn’t end for many years. 4 million people died in that conflict. Approaching your 62nd birthday you have the Cuban Missile Crisis, a tipping point in the Cold War. Life on our planet, as we know it, could well have ended. Great leaders prevented that from happening.

As you turn 75, the Vietnam War finally ends. Think of everyone on the planet born in 1900. How do you survive all of that?

A kid in 1985 didn’t think their 85-year-old grandparent understood how hard school was. Yet those grandparents (and now great grandparents) survived through everything listed above.”

Perspective is an amazing art. 🎯

As this year begins, let’s try and keep things in perspective. Let’s be smart, help each other out, and we will get through all of this. In the history of the world, there has never been a storm that lasted!💥

Head up and onward, as with any challenge in your way, this too, shall pass.🔥

Leadership Lesson: Leadership is a Verb 150 150 Bryce Henson

Leadership Lesson: Leadership is a Verb

Leadership is a verb.

It requires action.

The lowest level of it, is simply telling a subordinate what action to take.

The highest level of it, is modeling the desired action.

Today’s lesson?

Whatever your desired action is, lead by taking that action as an example to yourself & team.

This is true leadership.

Martin Luther King – procrastination is still the thief of time 150 150 Bryce Henson

Martin Luther King – procrastination is still the thief of time

I want to share one of my favorite quotes of all time with you.💥

“We are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today.

We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now.

In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late.

Procrastination is still the thief of time.

Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with a lost opportunity.

The tide in the affairs of men does not remain at flood – it ebbs.

We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is adamant to every plea and rushes on.

Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words, ‘Too late.’”

Martin Luther King, Jr

New York City, April 4th, 1967

Such powerful words!🔥

This is a reminder to NEVER take for granted the time that I have.⏰

It’s also a reminder that I need to be in the best physical condition that I can be.💪

I want to live without restriction.

I want to collect experiences and live to the fullest before it’s ‘too late’.

My wish for you is the same.🙌

With love,

-Coach Bryce
