[LL]: Position Before Submission

Hey Leader 🙌

This week in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I learned another leadership lesson.

One of the first concepts my coach James teaches is this:

Position before submission.

For those unfamiliar with Jiu Jitsu, beginners often rush for the finish.

They chase the submission.

The problem?

Without first establishing a dominant position, the opportunity rarely lasts.

The best practitioners understand that control comes before the finish.

Leverage comes before victory.

And the same principle applies to leadership.

Many entrepreneurs want to scale revenue, add locations, hire more people, or grow faster.

Nothing wrong with ambition.

However, too many leaders chase the submission before securing the position.

They pursue growth before culture.

Revenue before systems.

Expansion before relationships.

The result is predictable.

Growth occurs, but it becomes fragile.

Stress increases.

Problems multiply.

Momentum becomes difficult to sustain.

Great leaders understand that foundations create freedom.

A strong culture creates accountability.

Strong systems create consistency.

Strong relationships create trust.

When those pieces are in place, growth becomes the natural byproduct.

My message for you today:

Before chasing the next level, ask yourself this question:

Have I earned the position necessary to sustain the outcome I want?

Because in leadership, just like Jiu Jitsu, position comes before submission.

Make it a GREAT week!

The 5 Immutable Rules of Leadership

  1. Take Extreme Ownership: Everything is your responsibility, even when it’s not your fault.
  2. Put Your Oxygen Mask On First: Lead yourself before leading others.
  3. Wield Influence Through Moral Authority: People follow who you are, not what you say.
  4. It’s Not About You, Never Was, Never Will Be: Elevate others, build legacy.
  5. Turn Adversity Into Advantage: Pain is your power, use it.
